Baku Declaration sets common framework for climate action in tourism

Baku Declaration sets common framework for climate action in tourism

The Baku Declaration has established a common framework for climate action in tourism, according to Fuad Naghiyev, Chairman of the State Tourism Agency. Speaking during a discussion session, Naghiyev outlined how the agreement aims to align the industry's environmental efforts around shared goals and measurable commitments.

The declaration sets out a coordinated approach for reducing emissions and improving sustainability across the tourism sector. It encourages countries and industry stakeholders to work from the same set of principles rather than pursuing disconnected initiatives. Naghiyev noted that a unified framework makes it easier to track progress and compare results between different destinations and operators.

The announcement comes as the global travel industry faces growing pressure to address its environmental footprint. Tourism accounts for a notable share of emissions through transport, accommodation, and related services, and many governments have been searching for practical ways to bring those numbers down without harming local economies that depend on visitors.

Under the framework, participating parties are expected to share best practices, support greener infrastructure, and promote climate-conscious planning at the destination level. The approach also emphasizes cooperation between public agencies and private businesses, since neither side can achieve meaningful reductions alone.

Naghiyev stressed that the declaration is not simply a statement of intent but a working structure that will guide policy and investment decisions in the years ahead. He added that the common framework should help smaller destinations access knowledge and resources that might otherwise be out of reach.

The discussion session brought together officials and industry representatives who welcomed the move toward consistency. Many noted that fragmented standards have made it difficult for travelers to judge the environmental claims of tourism providers, and a shared framework could improve transparency.
